Shenzhen Airport Breaks Ground on Terminal 2 Complex and North Cargo Area with the Latter’s Integrated Supporting Facilities

2025-08-23

On August 23, Shenzhen Airport breaks ground on Terminal 2 complex and North Cargo Area with the latter’s integrated supporting facilities. Upon completion, these two projects will significantly enhance Shenzhen Airport in terms of scale, operational capacity, efficiency, and development space, providing strong support for building Shenzhen into a comprehensive international aviation hub serving as a regional gateway.

Driven by the economic and social vitality of Shenzhen, the airport has experienced rapid growth in its core aviation operations in recent years. In 2024, annual passenger volume surpassed 60 million for the first time. From January to July this year, the airport handled approximately 38 million passengers and 1.16 million tons of cargo and mail—the highest levels recorded during this period since operations began.

The Terminal 2 complex project, classified as a major provincial and municipal initiative, is located north of the airport, between Runway One and Runway Two. Upon completion, it will form the central terminal area of Shenzhen Airport together with Terminal 3 and the Satellite Hall. Designed to handle 31 million passengers annually, the project includes a 400,000-square-meter Terminal 2 main terminal building and 53 aircraft parking positions on the apron. It will be supported by a 30,000-square-meter rail transit interchange center, a 30,000-square-meter ground transportation center, and a 143,500-square-meter parking garage, along with key infrastructure such as railway-related modifications and an airside automated people mover system. Terminal 2 will integrate with multiple rail lines including the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway, Metro Line 11, Metro Line 20, and the Shenzhen-Daya Bay Intercity Railway. Internally, an automated people mover system will efficiently connect Terminal 2 with Terminal 3 and the Satellite Hall, enabling seamless air-rail and air-ground transfers, as well as convenient inter-terminal shuttle services to meet demands for fast connections and transfers.

The North Cargo Area project is situated north of Terminal 2, south of Fuyong River, adjacent to the Linghang Elevated Road, Metro Line 20, and the depot of Metro Line 11 on its eastern side, and next to the airport’s third runway on its western side. It is a key task outlined in the Implementation Plan for the Construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the 14th Five-Year Plan Period and a major initiative under the national “14th Five-Year Plan.” The cargo terminal occupies a total site area of 804,000 square meters with a floor area of 570,600 square meters. The supporting apron and production auxiliary zones cover an additional 573,000 square meters. Once completed and operational, the project is expected to work in tandem with the Terminal 2 complex, adding annual air cargo and mail handling capacity of over 1.8 million tons.

Upon completion, both projects will operate synergistically with Shenzhen Airport’s existing Terminal 3, Satellite Hall, Runway One, Runway Two, and the soon-to-be-operational third runway, collectively strengthening the airport’s role as a comprehensive international aviation hub. Located within the northern airport zone, their commissioning will further expand the airport’s development space, drive industrial agglomeration and upgrade supporting facilities in the northern sector, and inject new momentum into the development of airport-linked industries in the region.

Going forward, Shenzhen Airport will resolutely implement the deployment requirements set by the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and the People’s Government of Shenzhen Municipality, embrace the concept of integrated “project clusters,” and proceed with a strong sense of responsibility, mission, and urgency. The airport will strictly manage safety, quality, schedule, and integrity throughout all projects. This commitment aims to deliver “exemplary, model, safe, and clean” projects that will bolster the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Area of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.
